Father and Mother of the Universe
In this week’s Bible Lesson, “Love,” we read from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy in section 1 the following:
“Love, the divine Principle, is the Father and Mother of the universe, including man.” (p. 256:7)
In writing about this passage, David Oakes remarks in the March 20, 2017 Sentinel article “Maintaining spiritual altitude” the following:
“We must rise above the material sense of things to the spiritual in order to see God, divine Love, as the Father and Mother of the universe. Once we have the spiritual horizon clearly in view, seeing man (the generic term for ourselves and others) as the spiritual image of God, inseparable from our divine origin, we can not only maintain spiritual altitude, but we can also be Christian healers.”
Additionally, Charles Mendick comments in his Sentinel article “Discharge from the Service?” (March 23, 1946):
“Since Love creates the universe, can there be a place for hate, intolerance, pride of power, selfishness, and distrust? Since divine Mind, Principle, creates the universe, can lack of understanding, incompetence, or indifference characterize it? Would an all-loving father or mother allow hunger, cold, disease, want, and the fear of these to enter the experience of his family, if he could prevent them? Should we expect less from the omnipotent God, good, who is our ever-loving Father-Mother? Obviously, the answer is ‘No.’”
You are my wisdom, and You are my wealth,
You are my substance, my joy, and my health,
My Father and Mother, my haven of peace,
My comfort, my healer, my place of release.
